In early November Verizon Wireless made a giant splash with its two new Android powered phones, the Droid and the Droid Eris. To date, it is likely that Verizon has sold over 1,000,000 droid phones, meaning there are plenty of new users of the Android OS out there. I am one of the world’s new proud droid owners, and have been increadibly happy with the phone & its capabilities.
With Christmas only a few days away, I think its safe to assume that there will be plenty of new Droid owners as of 12/25. Given this, I thought I’d put together a list of killer social media applications for your Android phone!
Twitter
I’ve given multiple twitter clients on the Droid a shot, but the one I personally fell in love with is Seesmic. Seesmic is everything a mobile twitter client should be, visually pleasing, feature rich and easy to use. Seesmic lets you upload photos via yFrog, Twitpic & MobyPicture, videos can be uploaded to yFrog, Twitvid & YouTube. Seesmic also features Bit.ly integration! To top it all off- Seesmic allows you to fine-tune your notification settings.
FourSquare
FourSquare is a location-based urban exploring application. When you visit a location, such as a bar or coffee shop you “check in” at that location. The more you use FourSquare the more points you get, eventually you can unlock “badges” and even become the “mayor” of a location, meaning you’ve check in there more than anyone else. You really only start to understand FourSquare once you start using it.
I was very interested in FourSquare but never really used it until I got my Droid because there was no app available for my Blackberry. The Android application is gorgeous and works well. When you launch the app, FourSquare will attempt to pull your GPS location and display nearby locations, if you don’t see the place you are at under nearby locations, just search for it.
FourSquare can be a lot of fun once you get going with it. Friend me up!
Facebook
I’m going to be brutally honest here, the Facebook application for Android is woefully inadequate. Its ugly, has limited functionality and does not allow for video uploads amongst other things. Until Facebook gets its act together in the Android App Dept, I have been using touch.facebook.com. This site was originally designed for the iPhone, and works well without having to run an additional application. Even though its just a mobile page, I feel like its slicker than the application itself. The page also gives you the option to jump both to the regular mobile version of Facebook as well as the full site. Add a shortcut to the page on your home screen!
UStream Broadcaster
You have probably heard of Ustream, it is a service that allows you to stream videos live onto the web. Ustream broadcaster lets you broadcast video LIVE from your phone! It is a great app to have just incase you find yourself in the middle of breaking news, or just want to share a funny moment with friends. UStream broadcaster also features Twitter integration so you can tweet that you are broadcasting directly from inside the app, new tweets @You will display over the video. Very cool!
Honorable Mention: Bump
In all likelihood you have seen the iPhone commercial that shows two iPhones bumping together and then sharing information. Well now we can Bump with our iPhone brothers! Just download the Bump app from the Market and you will be able to share contacts and files with Android powered phones as well as iPhones. This is not *technically* a social media app (hence the honorable mention) but it can still come in handy at Tweet-Ups!
Have an Android application that you think readers should know about? Leave it in the comments!

I started to use this new app Who’s Free (http://bit.ly/fqZy6g). It’s kinda like Foursquare but easier cuz it mainly shows who is free to hang out any time:)
